Kris demonstrates the form of Tai Chi in a self-help video. She also explains that in Tai Chi, there are many other forms, and that one must become proficient in all the different types of forms and patterns of Tai Chi. She also notes that there is no universal set of forms for all people.
Kris explains how this form of martial arts can benefit the student’s body and mind. She says that Gongfu Tai Chi helps to improve the soft tissue of the body. It helps to increase flexibility. It helps to relieve stress and anxiety. It helps to increase awareness and to improve the student’s reflexes. She also notes that students who practice these techniques learn how to control their body movement. They learn how to move their body in a way that allows the body to go where the mind tells it to go. Kris adds, “Tai Chi is a very effective form of exercise.
Kris notes that this form of martial arts includes a set of techniques that are practiced in a slow motion and that is called Gongfu. She says that Gongfu is practiced at the slowest possible speed possible. She says, “You must be able to concentrate.” She points out that this form of Tai Chi practice focuses on the muscles, while Qigong focuses on the spirit and the energy. She also emphasizes that Gongfu is not a competitive form of martial arts.
Kris says, “The position of the student is very important. The student must stay in the center of the circle.” She points out that if the student’s center line goes away from the teacher, the student is no longer in balance. She also notes that if the student’s center line goes to the right or left, she is going in a circle and will not be able to correctly make the movements in a circular pattern.” She says that the basic movements in Tai Chi, such as raising and lowering, are achieved by using the ankle and the knee.
The W on-demand classes, which are held at Kris’ home in Seattle, feature a different “focus” each session — from Tai Chi to strength training to abs toning. Students practice all movements slowly, in a counter-clockwise manner.
Students that attend these classes receive instruction from Kris on a variety of topics, but since she does not teach classes regularly, these on-demand classes focus primarily on Tai Chi chuan, the popular Chinese martial art that includes continuous, slow-paced movements that involve multiple joints and muscles.
