We have made some changes to the way we work to get Steam launch handles. When it is a launchable title, Windows tries to create a Steam launch handle for that title, and when one exists, it attempts to impersonate that handle and launch the game silently with no splash screen, in the background. When a launch handle is missing, and the game being launched requires manual operation, the launch is done silently within the background. The actual reason for this is security, so when the user clicks a launchable game and the game is launched the handle has already been created and the user is limited to what the handle can do and when the game launches, it will likely launch silently, even if it would have been easier to show a splash screen (this is the behaviour found on Windows, Mac and Linux). The problem that was present was that if the user doesn't log into their Steam account for a while, the handle that was supposed to exist but doesn't, will no longer be in the user's launch settings. As these can be "kept" for several days, this is a very nasty threat to any user. As everyone who has a Steam handle, knows that automatic updates to Steam don't update anything when Steam is closed (without a key, which is a different issue), the lockout on this issue is extremely short.

We have fixed this by attempting to, within a very short timeframe, create a Steam launch handle, and then seeing if the handle exists and if it doesn't save that in the user's launch settings to try the next day. If the handle does exist, and the game is a launchable title, we would have to temporarily deny the handle any other operations, whilst we impersonate it, this could be done by slightly limiting its usefulness so we don't slow down the game, or we could just make it invisible, as has been done in the past.
